About Kijkduin

Next to the Zandmotor, the sand engine built in 2011 that is slowly spreading along the coast. It keeps reshaping the sandbanks and a shallow lagoon behind them, so a spot that worked last month may not now.

Groynes lie along the beach, often underwater, and the current can be deceptive. In summer the beach is busy with swimmers.

The beach faces NW (313°). Offshore wind, the clean kind, blows from between E and S; onshore wind from between WSW and NNE chops it up; the rest is cross-shore.

We take the wind 5 km out to sea, check the waves against Rijkswaterstaat's Hollandse Kust Zuid platform station 18 km away, and read storm surge at the Scheveningen gauge.
