About Scheveningen
The busiest surf beach in the country, between the harbour moles and the pier. Surfers have priority between the pier and the first groyne; kiters launch further along, north of groyne 42 at the lighthouse and at groyne 37 on the Zuiderstrand.
Sandbanks shift constantly and rip currents form between them; groynes are hard to see at high water. Fishing nets (staandwant) have been set near the harbour heads and the pier. Busy at weekends.
The beach faces NW (310°). Offshore wind, the clean kind, blows from between E and S; onshore wind from between WSW and NNE chops it up; the rest is cross-shore.
We take the wind 5 km out to sea, check the waves against Rijkswaterstaat's Hollandse Kust Zuid platform station 15 km away, and read storm surge at the Scheveningen gauge.
Along the coast: Kijkduin to the south, Noordwijk to the north.
