About Hoek van Holland

The beach north of the Nieuwe Waterweg's harbour moles (the Noorderdam). Swimming is banned within 100 m of the Noorderhoofd, and the Maasmond shipping lane runs right beside the beach.

The harbour moles and Maasvlakte shelter it from the south-west, so waves are smaller in their lee and a south-westerly wind is often gusty. The water deepens quickly and the shorebreak can be awkward; locals say the best waves come at low water.

The beach faces NW (310°). Offshore wind, the clean kind, blows from between E and S; onshore wind from between WSW and NNE chops it up; the rest is cross-shore.

We take the wind 5 km out to sea, check the waves against Rijkswaterstaat's Maasgeul station 7 km away, and read storm surge at the Hoek van Holland gauge.

Along the coast: Westkapelle to the south, Ter Heijde to the north.
