About Texel

The island's North Sea beach, numbered by beach posts (paal). Groynes run out up to paal 19, so stay clear of them at high tide; north of paal 19 there are none, but the current is stronger and drifts toward Vlieland.

Paal 9 near Den Hoorn gets the biggest waves in a north-westerly; paal 17 is the busiest. The best waves usually come on the ebb.

The beach faces WNW (298°). Offshore wind, the clean kind, blows from between ENE and SSE; onshore wind from between SW and N chops it up; the rest is cross-shore.

We take the wind 5 km out to sea, check the waves against Rijkswaterstaat's Eierlandse Gat station 21 km away, and read storm surge at the Texel Noordzee gauge.

Along the coast: Petten to the south.
