About Petten

In front of the Pettemer sea wall and the Hondsbossche dunes. The first sandbank lies 100–150 m out and can be very shallow at low water; the best waves often come on the rising tide at the second bank, about 350 m out.

Expect a strong current, a strong shorebreak, rocky breakwaters and groynes buried under the sand. A south wind is a little weaker here, which can make it an option in a storm.

The beach faces WNW (285°). Offshore wind, the clean kind, blows from between NE and SSE; onshore wind from between SW and N chops it up; the rest is cross-shore.

We take the wind 5 km out to sea, check the waves against Rijkswaterstaat's Hollandse Kust Noord platform station 26 km away, and read storm surge at the Den Helder gauge.

Along the coast: Egmond aan Zee to the south, Texel to the north.
