About Wijk aan Zee
Just north of IJmuiden's 400 m harbour wall, with the steelworks behind the dunes. Swell from the south wraps around the wall, and the waves here are rated among the best on the Dutch coast.
It is very tide-dependent and can jack up at high water. A current runs from south to north almost all the time, and rips (muien) are common enough that the council asked for warning signs every 100 m. The area right next to the pier is kept for swimmers and surfers.
The beach faces W (280°). Offshore wind, the clean kind, blows from between NE and SSE; onshore wind from between SSW and N chops it up; the rest is cross-shore.
We take the wind 5 km out to sea, check the waves against Rijkswaterstaat's IJgeul 1 station 6 km away, and read storm surge at the IJmuiden gauge.
Along the coast: Bloemendaal to the south, Egmond aan Zee to the north.
