About Zandvoort
Three sandbars sit off the beach, so waves break, back off and break again on the way in. A strong current runs along the shore; start upwind of where you want to be.
From 15 April to 1 October fast watersports (kite, windsurf) are zoned, and swimmers fill the beach on warm days. Marked fishing nets are set from time to time.
The beach faces WNW (291°). Offshore wind, the clean kind, blows from between ENE and SSE; onshore wind from between SW and N chops it up; the rest is cross-shore.
We take the wind 5 km out to sea, check the waves against Rijkswaterstaat's IJgeul 3 station 20 km away, and read storm surge at the IJmuiden gauge.
Along the coast: Noordwijk to the south, Bloemendaal to the north.
